Festival dedicated to '˜inspirational' founder

The Berwick Food & Beer Festival returns for its 10th year and promises another weekend of the very best in local produce, live music and fascinating demonstrations.

Organised by the Berwick Slow Food Group, the festival will take place from September 1 to 3 with local producers setting up stall at Berwick’s historic barracks.

This year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of Liz Houghton.

Liz was a passionate supporter of the Slow Food Group in Berwick and was involved in the festival from its inception. Liz sadly passed away last October and will be greatly missed by all involved with the festival.

Joint festival director Ruth McNeely said: “Liz was very passionate about good local food and supporting our local artisan producers, she worked tirelessly to obtain funding to stage the very first food festival. She was an inspiration and one of the reasons our festival is such a success today.”

Following this year’s festival, Berwick Slow Food will be making a donation to Berwick Cancer Care.

The 10th year of Berwick Food & Beer Festival promises to be a bumper event. Festival organisers are hard at work planning an event they describe as ‘bigger and better than ever’.

There will be a few surprises this year but visitors can expect regular highlights.

Food stalls will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, selling everything from honey to fresh seafood. Spots are booking up fast and this year’s visitors can expect upwards of 70 stalls to browse.

The beer marquee will host the festival’s opening night on the Friday when local singer-songwriter Electric Penelope will be performing her unique blend of jazz and soul-infused pop. On Saturday the spacious beer marquee will, be open from noon to midnight. Local band Hardly Original will be on stage on Saturday evening.

On Sunday, the beer marquee will be open from noon to 6pm, with a backdrop of live blues and mellow jazz.

If there’s one piece of advice the organisers offer to visitors this year it’s come hungry! Street food stalls will be set up outside the beer marquee and inside the barracks itself.

There will be lots of family entertainment too, and a chance to take a break from browsing and eating in the hugely popular demonstration kitchen over the weekend.
