Ex-Wooler police station could be turned into a B&B

The scheme for the Grade II listed property, at 17 Church Street, will only require slight alterations to achieve the changes needed to provide bed and breakfast rooms plus owners’ accommodation.

A supporting statement from Eyemouth-based IRD Design, on behalf of applicants Mr and Mrs Connolly, states: ‘When they first looked at Wooler, they realised how difficult it was to get bed and breakfast accommodation.During the high season they had to book far in advance and eight miles outside of the village.

‘As the police station is on the St Cuthbert’s Way walk, they feel it is perfectly situated for ramblers and travellers alike. With Wooler labelled as the gateway to the Cheviots, quality bed and breakfast accommodation is in high demand.’

In addition, they also want to create a space that could be used to host a yearly Silent Santa.

‘Children with special needs very rarely get to see Santa because either it is too overwhelming, especially for autistic children, or too difficult to organise or other factors,’ states IRD. ‘Their aim is to provide a week-long period before Christmas where special needs children and their families can book to see Santa in a safe and secure way. This or similar will be a yearly event and something they are keen as a family to provide for the community.’

Northumbria Police now occupy space in the Cheviot Centre.
