The 16-year-old, who is a jiu jitsu blue belt, first of all entered the adult Gi competition, where she won her opening fight, only to discover her opponent had been entered in the wrong bracket – she was supposed to be in the heavier 63.5kg division.

She then faced someone her own weight and won again, taking the gold medal.

Next up, Abbi was in a very big bracket in No-Gi. Abbi had six opponents to battle with, but won her early bouts on points and her final contest with a submission, thereby taking her into the final.

In each of the earlier fights, the referee had stopped the fight if the competitors rolled onto the outer edge of the mats. He then brought them back into the middle and re-started the fight.

This happened repeatedly in the final, but on one occasion her opponent went for a choke as Abbi went to return to the centre. The referee let it go and awarded the fight to Abbi’s opponent.

This left Abbi with the silver medal in adult No-Gi to go with the gold from the Gi competition.
