North Sunderland Parish Council, which is responsible for the cemetery, recently held a meeting with its contracted groundsman to put a plan in place for the coming year.

Grass-cutting will now be carried out once a fortnight instead of weekly, while a cemetery tidy will be conducted once a month.

Last year the council spent £4,027 on grass cutting at £135 a cut.

Coun Geoffrey Stewart, parish council chairman, said: “He knows where we are coming from and has agreed to help. We can’t do any more until he has tried it out.”

The situation will be reviewed in a few months’ time.
