Emergency inspection carried out on Berwick Old Bridge after section falls into river.

An emergency inspection has been carried out on Berwick's Old Bridge after a section of the structure fell into the River Tweed.

Northumberland County Council inspectors were on site early this morning and the bridge was closed to traffic.

A notice of the road closure states: 'Northumberland County Council to carry out emergency bridge inspection after section of the bridge detached and fell into the river. It is expected that the road will only be closed on November 8.'

No further details about the nature of the damage have been given.

Traffic diversions will be in place.
