The surprise of the event, held earlier this month, was the announcement and double presentation to Rotarian Colin Edney.

Firstly, there was a letter to him from the Rotary International President congratulating him on 50 years of service as a Rotarian.

This was followed by the 81-year-old being awarded a Paul Harris medal.

Afterwards, president Chris said: “Named after the founder of Rotary, the Paul Harris medal is something that is rarely issued and indeed in its nearly 90 years of existence only a handful of Berwick Rotarians have ever received one.”

Colin, a retired solicitor, expressed his delight at getting these awards.

He also admitted his complete surprise, saying the secret had been well kept, he had not even heard whisper of it happening.
