Berwick St Mary’s has secured sponsorship from MGM Coaching to work alongside other schools such as Belford First, Prior Park First and others, to organise a range of sporting events designed to get children of all ages together in a variety of competitive sports that demonstrates the need for physical fitness and team work.

The Year 2 Dodgeball tournament was 2018’s first event held at St Mary’s.

After some intense competition, which not only demonstrated great skills but even more impressive sportsmanship, Prior Park came out on top with a close victory in the final game.

Gary Hilton, head teacher at St Mary’s, explained that this initiative is an idea for the Berwick Partnership to make the most of the resources it has as a group of schools.

“With school finances getting increasingly stretched, such initiatives allow schools to work together to provide a rich variety of sporting experiences without the need to spend precious funds on external support and resources,” he explained.

Further events are planned later this year at St Mary’s and Belford First, including athletic and street games tournaments, which again will be sponsored by Matty Moor, of MGM.

Sports coaching students from Northumbria University are also working with St Mary’s First School over the next two years to promote healthy lifestyles from the Early Years to Year 4.
