Dinner set to celebrate '˜Jock and his giantkillers'
Berwick Rangers will mark the 50th anniversary of their 1967 1-0 Scottish Cup win over Rangers with a dinner in the Black & Gold on Friday (January 20).
The. 1967 captain, Doug Coutts, has been contacted following an appeal, and he will be in attendance with a number of the historic squad, including Gordon Haig, Ian Riddell, Russell Craig, Alan Ainslie (who will fly in from Australia), Andy Rodgers, John Keith and the family of the late Jim Kilgannon.
Also in attendance will be former Rangers’ players Dave Smith and Willie Johnston - Smith went on to lead Berwick as player/manager to their 1978/79 League Two title, and the majority of that squad will also be at the event, following an appeal by the club’s record goalscorer and all-time appearance-maker Eric Tait to contact his former team-mates.
Guest speaker at the dinner will be former Scotland international, Everton, Chelsea, Tranmere Rovers, Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Clyde player Pat Nevin, who in recent years has become a TV and radio pundit.
The story of Berwick’s infamous victory over Rangers, ‘Jock and his giantkillers,’ which is still regarded as one of the biggest shocks in Scottish football, is outlined with a sepcial feature which appears on page 63.
And next week we will carry a fans’ view of the day, written by Keith Ryan, who was only eight at the time, plus pictures etc from the anniversary event.
