Cyclists are urged to light up their bikes
As the dark autumnal mornings and evenings close in, Northumbria Police have issued safety advice to cyclists.
Fears for their safety had been raised by a Berwick Advertiser reader worried that some cyclists were putting themselves at risk because they could not be seen by drivers.
He was particularly concerned about a cyclist regularly using the A1 south of Berwick.
Neighbourhood Sergeant for Berwick, Alan Bogle, said: “We want everyone who uses our region’s roads to feel safe – especially as the darker nights start to set in.
“It’s now a legal requirement for cyclists to have lights and reflectors fitted if they’re travelling on a public road after dark.”
He added: “Staying visible on the roads during the winter months is really important and we would encourage all cyclists to take note so they can continue to cycle safely.”
