Armed police surrounded an Alnwick house in the early hours of Sunday, August 23, following reports of an assault where a man appeared to have a firearm.

A dramatic picture shows armed police on Three Tuns Lane looking onto Dodds Lane where two men were eventually arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

The two men, aged 32 and 25, have now been released under investigation.

Officers were first called to reports of an assault at an address in Dodds Lane, Alnwick shortly before 4am where police believed the persons to be known to one another.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “It was also reported that a male was present within the address with what appeared to be a firearm.”

A thorough search of the property was carried and the two men were taken into custody on Sunday morning.

Witnesses have reported seeing armed police and dog units at the scene for a number of hours.
