Councillor hits out at post-16 comments
Comments made by Labour's leader in a Northumberland County Council meeting have been branded '˜unnecessary and deeply offensive'.
Grant Davey criticised the council’s decision to remove transport charges for young people travelling to and from sixth form education. He said removing the charges was ‘probably great for rich people in the countryside who can afford to cart their kids off to school.’
Coun Guy Renner-Thompson, member for Bamburgh, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I heard Grant make these comments. When his council introduced these charges it was a real hit for hardworking families who have a legal obligation to send their kids to school. Hard-pressed families in my area deserve an apology for the comments that were deeply offensive.”
