The council did not receive a reply and did not pursue the purchase any further.

Clerk Gareth Davies revealed: “On behalf of council we reached out to the owners. The price they were asking for it was unrealistic but we reached out to them to see if there was the possibility of putting together a package to buy it. They didn’t bother to return the phone call.”

He added: “I think it’s a crying shame that Northumberland County Council’s conservation officers haven’t looked more closely at it. Whether it is a conservation project or not, I don’t know, but certainly if you were rebuilding Spittal as a destination for modern tourists that is the anchor site.”
