Berwick Colts recorded their fourth straight win in convincing fashion but poor finishing and a poor final ball meant the game was in the balance until late in the second half.

Berwick started well and with just two minutes played Moore split the Tweeddale backline with a ball into space and Bloomfield was on it in a flash and in the clear but the Colts top-scorer seemed caught in two minds and his weak side-footed shot didn’t trouble the keeper.

With Berwick turning the screw, Tweeddale conceded a needless penalty on nine minutes when Moore was upended in a late challenge after the ball was away and Bloomfield confidently tucked away the spot-kick to keep his record of scoring in every game going.

Berwick’s midfield were dominant and the backline were rarely troubled but chances were wasted all too often and, on 20 minutes, Moore wasted a glorious chance when he skewed his effort high and wide after Ruddicks clever directed header played him in with a clear sight of goal.

Further good chances were wasted by Muckle and Bloomfield and then Ruddick missed the target from close range after a quick free-kick gave him a good sight at goal.

With six second-half minutes played, Berwick finally put a bit of daylight between their opposition when Muckle pounced on a loose pass before beating one man - then he looked to have lost the ball, only to barge into a defender and it fell to Moore who smashed it home from point-blank range.

Moore could have added a second midway through the half after good work by Ruddick and Robertson but the Tweeddale keeper pulled off a fine save to deny him.

With 20 minutes remaining, Ruddick unleashed a thunderous free-kick from 25 yards out that seemed destined for the top corner but it rattled the bar and Rae looked certain to score from the rebound but the keeper managed to get a slight touch to deny the midfielder.

Robertson was next to go close when he looked to have took a touch too many but somehow got a low shot away that the keeper again managed to get behind and block.

Brown had a good effort from distance just clear the bar after Newton’s lay-off but, with four minutes remaining, Bloomfield showed how it should be done when he left two defenders for dead as he ran in the box at full pace before tempting the keeper out and dinking the ball over him with a cheeky finish.

Tweeddale’s best chance of the game came when they shot wide with the clock running out but Gillie wasn’t called to make a proper save all game and the defence looked comfortable and registered a second clean sheet in four games.

Also in the Border Amateur League at the weekend, Tweedmouth Amateurs won 2-1 away to St Boswells in the B League. Goalscorer for the Berwick side were Shane McGregor and Kyle Wood.

In the C League, Highfields United beat Hawick Legion Rovers 4-2 at home.

All six goals came in the first half with Ryan Wedderburn (2), Duffy and Jones netting for the Berwick side.

This Saturday (September 30), fixtures for the local sides are:

B League - Lauder v Tweedmouth Amateurs; C League - Berwick Colts v Melrose; Highfields United v Gala Thistle.

* In the East of Scotland League, Tweedmouth Rangers faced Peebles at home on Old Shielfield. They lost 2-3 with their goals coming from Cromarty and Walker.

Last week, manager John Patterson resigned from his position - a club statement is expected shortly.
