Concerned about harm
With reference to Nick Jones' letter about roadside verges (Berwick Advertiser, July 6), I too am concerned about the practice of some landowners of cutting verges outwith, but bordering, their land.#
Like Mr Jones, I have no objection to cutting verges in the interest of road safety, but to closely mow the entire width of a verge seems irresponsible and grossly harmful to the flora and fauna of the verge.
Miles of verges are treated this way several times during the summer.
I personally have witnessed a farmer running a field roller over the verges in early June prior to mowing, the height of the ground nesting season.
