Colts hit back for a last-gasp great escape

A never say die Berwick fired in three late goals to keep their unbeaten record intact in this nine goal thriller.

The Colts took a second minute lead when Lee Heath side footed the ball home.Berwick squandered a host of clear cut chances and were made to pay when Melrose drew level on the half hour mark when William Mercer hit an incredible volley into the top corner.Five minutes later and Mercer added his second when he converted a half chance, and with 12 second half minutes played,he completed his hat-trick.

Manager Brown brought on Aitchison and within two minutes the winger had reduced the deficit when he pounced to score after Briggs had his shot parried by McMillan in goal.

With just over half an hour remaining Mercer grabbed his fourth to leave Berwick with a mountain to climb.

With 15 minute to go Berwick were given a glimmer of hope when Smith scored. Berwick were then awarded a clear cut penalty which Strang netted with a cheeky clip to level the scores.

Craig Heath grabbed the glory and all three points when his injury time downward header squeezed past a crowd of bodies to complete the great escape.
