Berwick Colts’ Sanderson Cup Quarter final against Hawick was sadly overshadowed when young defender Niall Richards broke his leg in the 18th minute of a fiercely contested match on a heavy playing surface.

Berwick were confident of getting a result with a full squad to choose from and both sides had early chances.

Disaster struck when Richards and Turnbull both collided at full pace going for a loose ball leaving the Colts defender with a broken leg in a firm but fair challenge.

Berwick took a while to regroup and Hawick enjoyed a good spell of possession without really troubling Hastie in the Colts goaland at half-time it remained 0-0.

After Hastie made a great save in the Berwick goal, their afternoon went from bad to worse when Heath got his marching orders for retaliation.

Ten man Berwick grew in confidence and their pressure paid off with 15 minutes remaining when Briggs headed it in at the far post.

Their joy proved short-lived when Hawick were awarded a penalty just over a minute later, which they converted,

Deep into injury time Hawick grabbed the winning goal when a free kick from the left ended up in the net with the aid of a deflection off Murray.
