College needed to help trades
Engineering firm SWP has backed calls for a further education college in Berwick.
Managing director Bill Parkin made the appeal at Berwick Investors Conference.
He said: “We are moving forward as a company because of investment in machinery and investment in appreticeships. At the moment, probably 50 per cent of our workforce are apprentices that have served their time with us.
“One of the big problems we face is that they have to go to Ashington college. They can do the practical stuff at our place but they need a facility in Berwick to learn. I think Northumberland College would like a bigger presence in the area and we’ve got to make it possible for them to do that. This is the case for all trades.”
