College is '˜odd entity,' admits principal

Northumberland College principal Marcus Clinton has described the Berwick centre as '˜an odd entity' with difficult access and small rooms.

Locating to the high street by leasing a suitable property would be a considerable improvement.

Berwick, being a satellite of the college, could only offer so many courses and for some there has to be a trip down to Ashington.

It was appreciated that, despite help with travel costs, the 60 mile journey was really too far.

He stressed the range of activities now being undertaken by its 6,000 students when he spoke to Berwick Civic Society.

The aim is to offer the best possible opportunity for youngsters. This involves a far greater emphasis on employability skills. Cuts in the further education budget have though necessitated a rethink of the process.
