Club members learn all about the Lords
Members of Berwick U3A were given an insight into the work of the House of Lords at their March monthly meeting.
The Right Hon The Lord Beith and The Right Hon Baroness Maddock, Lady Beith, addressed the meeting, before catching the train to London for a busy week of Brexit debates and votes.
Lady Beith, the more senior member of the second chamber, spoke first and gave an overview of the Lords and its work.
She explained that one of her responsibilities was ‘whipping’ her husband, in her role as a whip for the Liberal Democrats.
At a time when questions are being raised about the legitimacy of the House of Lords, due to its Brexit rebellions, the two speakers were keen to emphasise the importance of a second chamber in Parliament.
Lord Beith stated that bills from the Commons needed a considerable amount of work before they were in a fit state to become law.
In addition to asking the Commons to think again about some issues, the Lords, through its committees, does a lot of necessary tidying up.
Lord and Lady Beith were thanked for giving their time to speak to U3A members at the beginning of a very busy and important week in parliament.
