Christmas shoeboxes sent on their way
People in north Northumberland and the Borders have responded to a Christmas appeal with great generosity.
The Berwick centre for Operation Christmas child, based at Berwick Baptist Church, has gathered together their shoeboxes full of gifts and, during the last two weeks, the boxes have been checked, sealed and packed into a truck.
Now they are on their way to some very sad places in eastern Europe, where children know little of the pleasures that we consider normal for childhood.
In some countries there is still a tradition of placing children in orphanages , where they grow up largely forgotten.
David Heywood, coordinator of Operation Christmas Child, Berwick, said: “We hope that the arrival of these Christmas shoeboxes will bring much excitement and pleasure.”
Operation Christmas Child is organised by Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief and development organisation that works through local churches to support underprivileged communities.
