Check your smoke alarm
Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to test, replace and increase the number of smoke alarms in their homes as part of the Fire Kills campaign.
Residents are encouraged to test their alarms monthly, replace it after 10 years and make sure they have at least one smoke alarm on every level.
Smoke alarms provide the vital early warning that allow for a safe escape in the event of a fire, but the latest fire statistics reveal that smoke alarms only alerted households to one in every three fires in homes in England.
Despite 88 per cent of homes having at least one working smoke alarm, relying on only one alarm may mean that the fire does not reach the device in time to give residents early warning to allow them to safely exit the property.
Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, along with fire and rescue services around the UK, are supporting the latest Fire Kills campaign and are encouraging residents to think about the smoke alarms in their homes.
Paul Hedley, Chief Fire Officer at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Smoke alarms do save lives, but they rely on all of us taking responsibility for testing and replacing the devices and making sure we have them in the right places.
“You should make sure you have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, preferably in hallways and landings and near to sleeping areas and rooms where there are electrical appliances.
“It’s also important to remember that smoke alarms don’t last forever. The power might work, but the detection mechanism deteriorates with time. So whether they are battery operated or wired to the mains, to work at their best they should be tested every month and replaced every ten years.”
