Mayor Hazel Bettison welcomed members of the jiu jitsu club.

In Berwick, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was introduced by Thiago Ferreira in 2011 and has enjoyed a rapid increase in participation levels. A new fitness centre on Hide Hill has enabled it to expand further.

Cllr Bettison, who presented certificates to the students, said: “I was so proud in how they represented Berwick, it’s great seeing young kids keeping fit.”

TF Fitness Centre is now working on a project to offer free training sessions to under-privileged kids from the age of four to 15 from Berwick and surrounding areas and giving them the chance to develop a skill.

Sessions will be on Mondays from 5.30pm, although the starting date is still to be confirmed.

Kids who are already part to the team will also join the sessions in an alternating roster to assist and help the newcomers. Any support for the project would be appreciated.
