Campaigners still hope for local service for county

Rail campaigners remain hopeful that a local rail service could happen in Northumberland.

Dennis Fancett, chairman of the South East Northumberland Rail Users Group (SENRUG), believes it is the best way of improving services from Berwick.

The reopening of stations at Belford, Beal (for Holy Island) and Warkworth could form part of that.

He hoped it could link in with a local rail service from Edinburgh to Berwick once Reston and East Linton stations reopen.

“It would allow communities from the Scottish Borders and north Northumberland to have a rail service to Berwick. Our ambition would be to extend the Newcastle to Morpeth service all the way to Berwick.”
