Campaign is under way
Last week I started a Fit for purpose hospital for Berwick-upon-Tweed campaign.
I did this by distributing poll sheets asking for the people of Berwick and surrounding areas to indicate their preference for the new hospital from three viable sites – Seton Hall, The Swan Centre and the rebuild of the present hospital.
These have been accepted in Berwick and Eyemouth pharmacies, as well as in shops, cafes and restaurants in town, and in other local business premises.
Alongside my campaign, a new Facebook page, A Better Hospital For Berwick, has created a people’s poll for a vote for and against the proposal.
Community group Berwick Deserves Better earlier used Survey Monkey to gather views on services, etc.
The survey returned 460 results, the online poll sits at almost 800, and the paper preference sheets are returning high numbers already.
I arranged and attended an interview with Siobahn Brown, chief operating officer with Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), to clarify both positions and put to her local concerns.
Along with local residents Gordon and Jen McLean, I stressed the need to ensure we get a fit for purpose hospital, as already promised.
Following this, I decided a meeting with Anne-Marie Trevelyan was needed to again raise concerns and to ask what, as our MP, she was going to do on our behalf.
This meeting was also attended by Jen McLean and a representative of A Better Hospital For Berwick.
Notes were taken by the MP for Berwick and concerns raised will be looked into.
The poll gives everyone the chance to choose and decide with a democratic signature where they want a hospital.
Let’s hope we get what we deserve – a fit for purpose hospital.
