At a meeting of Berwick Town Council’s planning committtee, she said: “Bigger cars are taking up a huge amount of space. They are so big that the parking bays just aren’t big enough.”

Cllr Gregah Roughead agreed: “There’s no doubt cars have been getting bigger but nothing has been done to change the size of the bays.”

The standard parking space in the UK is 15.7ft (4.8m) in length, by 7.8ft (2.4m) in width.

However, last week National Car Parks (NCP) said it had widened some bays in parts of the country to cope with the popularity of increasingly large cars.
