Call for headstones to be well maintained
A parish council is asking families to ensure that headstones are kept in good condition and do not become a safety hazard.
North Sunderland Parish Council has made the request, in relation to the South Lane Cemetery.
It comes as a number of headstones are leaning over, while others have had to be laid flat because they were posing a potential danger.
The parish council has placed notices around the village to encourage people to look after loved ones’ headstones.
A parish council statement said: ‘To assist in maintaining the high standard in the South Lane Cemetery at North Sunderland, the parish council is asking that families ensure the headstones of their deceased loved ones are kept in good condition and do not become a safety hazard.
‘There are a number of headstones that are leaning over, which need to be standing upright and not encroaching on adjacent graves.
‘Some headstones have had to be laid flat because they were causing safety hazards. Ownership and responsibility of headstones remain with the family so please help us to keep our cemetery the beautiful and restful place that gives much comfort to all.’
At the meeting, it was said two small holes have appeared in a grave which will be checked.
