Berwick Rotary Club is responsible for the lights on the Royal Tweed Bridge and the main Christmas tree on Marygate, while the town council is responsible for the festive lights around the town.

“The more people on board the better,” said Coun Brian Douglas.

The council is also keen to put on a better switch-on event and close the gap on the likes of Alnwick and Morpeth.

But Coun Hazel Bettison said: “That comes at a price.”

Coun Ivor Dixon also said the lights infrastructure needed to be sorted out properly.

“There were times when lots of the lights on the new bridge were out,” he said. “It’s the same every year and it spoils the display. If we’re going to try and do things better, let’s get the lights sorted.”
