They are among 90 small business owners and sole traders across the North East publicly backing calls for a referendum on Brexit.

They have all written to Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan to demand a public vote on Brexit.

Victoria Knox, from Berwick, works in marketing, sales and advertising, with a special interest in horse-racing and farming.

She said: “The interaction of the £3.5 billion horse-racing industry between the UK and Ireland, and the UK and France is huge. The buying and selling, breeding and racing of horses between these countries has been relatively straightforward but regulations will change this. Meanwhile the uncertainty of future regulations in general means no one can make any plans.

“This is even worse in farming. Farmers are lambing now but don’t know whether they will have a market come the end of March. I spoke to someone else who is trying to diversify but can’t do anything because she doesn’t know the status of any markets between now and the autumn. No one has any idea how to move forward.

“We need a People’s Vote because if you believe in informed democracy, then what is there to be afraid of?”
