The 253 Berwick to Edinburgh, via Dunbar and Haddington, bus service will operate hourly with key commuter times enhanced during peak periods.

Extra journeys to Edinburgh’s west end including Haymarket Station have also been introduced.

In a further commitment to customers, a £600,000 fleet of new vehicles will serve the route from October. The vehicles will offer more comfortable seating, free WiFi and will be equipped with USB charging stations.

Despite the upgrade, prices on the service will remain the same with regular users potentially saving up to 28% on travel costs when purchasing Perryman’s 10 journey loyalty tickets.

Nicola Morrison, deputy managing director of parent company West Coast Motors, said: “Service 253 offers existing and new commuting customers an improved, affordable and reliable travel experience between Dunbar, Haddington and Edinburgh.

“In October we shall introduce a new fleet of buses to the route, which will be tailored to suit both commuting and long distance travel.

“We hope our investment plays a valuable part in further improving the attractiveness of bus travel and encourage more commuters out of cars.”

Cllr Michael Veitch, transport spokesman for East Lothian Council, said: “The increased frequency on Perryman’s 253 service is excellent news for East Lothian. This quality of the service provided by Perryman’s is always extremely high and as such is very popular indeed with local bus users. I am therefore certain that these additional services will be very warmly welcomed across the county.”

Established in 1973, Perryman’s Buses currently provide local and arterial bus services in East Lothian, the Scottish Borders and parts of the north of England. It has two depots located in Berwick upon Tweed and St Boswells in the Scottish Borders.
