First up on Saturday was Cody, who, after a bye in the first round, saw off his first opponent in under 40 seconds via a triangle choke.

He went onto fight a friend in the final – losing out to him via an arm bar submission move. This won Cody his first medal of the weekend which was a silver.

Then it was Jevon’s turn, after a tough fight, Jevon submitted to a triangle choke. This won him his first medal – a bronze, qualifying him to compete in the absolute category which means the podium placed blue belts in the 16 to 17-year-old boys – all weights competing to find who is the best juvenile blue belt.

He had two different opponents to the first division and, after two fights, won the bronze medal.

Day two was the no gi competition.

In Cody’s first fight, he was slammed by his opponent onto the mats which resulted in a time-out to allow him to recover and a penalty to his opponent. This fired Cody on and he choked the lad via a triangle, winning the chance to go for gold against his friend. In the final, though, Cody won his second silver medal.

Jevon was again up against two opponents, in his first fight, he lost by a choke to the eventual winner. In the next, after a close match, he ran out of time while adjusting a submission hold.

This meant a bronze again for Jevon and qualification into the absolute division where he took his fourth bronze of the weekend.

Their haul of six medals along with the other Checkmat junior/juveniles from other clubs, helped win the silver trophy for both the Gi and No Gi competitions.

After his success at the BJJ Junior Europeans Gi and No Gi championships in Wolverhampton, Jevon was straight back into the gym training for his first super fight representing Checkmat and TF Fitness Centre at Thornaby sports and Leisure Club at Thornaby TS17 9JB.

He was approached by the organisers of the North East Grappling Invitational event to showcase his skills against their chosen opponent in front of a paying audience.

The fight card features selected fighters from Scotland and the North East. Events like this can eventually lead to invites into events such as the prestigious Polaris Invitational.

Anyone wishing to support Jevon should contact him for tickets, which are £15. Doors open 6pm and the first fight is on at 7pm.
