Bridge could be focal point for cycling routes
The Old Bridge should be the scenic focal point of Berwick's efforts to attract more cyclists.
That is the view of Cllr Eric Goodyer, who believes cycling tourism has great potential in Berwick.
“The Old Bridge should be the cycle path and it should link up with the four main cycle routes we have here,” he said.
“We’re at the start of cycle path 1, one of the most important cycle routes in the country, at the start of cycle route 68 and we have the Berwickshire and Northumberland coastal paths. We should be making more of it and the Old Bridge is perfect for linking them.”
He acknowledged that the Old Bridge could not be considered for such a role while it is still used by traffic.
However, the eventual closure of the bridge to traffic has been mooted by Northumberland County Council and he believed this could provide an opportunity for cycling.
The discussion was the result of a county council request for suggested cycle routes.
Cllr Goodyer pointed out that the county council had already produced a sustainable travel plan for Berwick which included cycle routes.
