Berwick Colts, who will play in their first Border Amateur League Cup Final this Saturday, will go into the game as leaders of the C Division.

The Colts, who will face Gala Fairydean Rovers in the final of the Collie Cup at Kelso on Saturday, guaranteed top spot in the table with a narrow 3-2 home win over Ancrum at the Billendean.

And it was Rhys Bloomfield who emerged as their match-winner, bagging a hat-trick.

Berwick took the game to Ancrum and had them on the back foot for most of the first half.

However, they were unable to find a way through and, at half-time, it remained 0-0.

It wasn’t until an hour had been played that the Colts made the breakthrough. Bloomfield broke down the right and his cross was headed back into his path by Ruddick to open the scoring with a finish from two yards out.

Ancrum were still to register a shot on target in the first hour, so when they grabbed an equaliser from a corner that Berwick couldn’t clear it seemed all that possession and missed chances could now prove costly.

Berwick introduced debutant Davison and Lee Heath, which added that little extra pace and bite to their attacks.

Heath was involved in a great move with Brown, who somehow left three defenders with a burst of pace and trickery that left the Billendean crowd in shock but only a last-ditch block stopped the veteran from scoring his first goal in three years.

It was the Ruddick-Bloomfield combination which contributed again to the second goal, the latter tapping in to make it 2-1.

Ancrum pressed for a second leveller, but they paid the price when, in the 88th minute, Bloomfield struck again to complete his treble.

But just a minute later, the visitors pulled a second goal back, which made for a nervous finale.

However, Berwick managed to hang on, stretching their unbeaten run to 10 in both league and cup competitions.

Also in the Border Amateur League, Tweedmouth Amateurs beat Biggar 2-1 at the Five Arches to strengthen their grip at the top of the B Division.

The Berwick side’s winning goals were scored by Kyle Wood and Sean Phillips.

Meanwhile, Highfields United drew 2-2 at home against Kelso Amateurs in the C Division. Their goalscorers were Curle and Shields.
