Bid likely to be made for high street funding
Berwick Town Council has welcomed the recent announcement of Government funding to help transform high streets.
The £675million Future High Street Fund aims to help high streets evolve and adapt to the changes in the retail environment in recent years.
Town clerk Gareth Davies said: “The announcement of government funding for the transformation of the high street UK wide is great news, and we’re actively exploring the options with partners to address the needs of Berwick.”
The potential opportunities for Berwick were discussed at the council’s budget and administration committee meeting last week.
Full details of the fund are expected later this year with expressions of interest invited in the spring before more detailed business cases are worked up by next summer.

However, Mr Davies felt there were likely to be potential projects in Berwick which may fit the criteria of the scheme.
“From discussions I’ve had, it’s clear there is likely to be some kind of bid with regard to Berwick for the Future High Street Fund,” said Mr Davies.
He believed that Northumberland County Council would be putting the bid together with input from Berwick Regeneration Commission.
News of the fund was welcomed by Berwick Chamber of Trade earlier this month which hopes work could be done to transform Marygate’s fortunes.
