Better ways to spend money
We read that Northumberland County Council is to waste £40million, and real costs could rise considerably to £80million, on a new civic centre in Ashington.
The existing civic centre was built in 1981, so it is not old.
Instead of wasting taxpayers’ money on new civic centres, councillors should travel around Northumberland and experience the disgraceful state of our roads.
The money should be spent on the safety of our roads, repairing the large potholes, repainting the white lines and zebra crossings, and cleaning the road signs.
The £40million plus could improve not just the roads, but the lives of all the people of Northumberland.
It could provide better housing, secure employment for the area, and bring about the regeneration of some of Northumberland’s town and village centres.
