Berwickshire baker gets her shortbread on shelves at Aldi
A baking enthusiast's recipe for shortbread definitely doesn't take the biscuit as it has been named as the best in the land and gone on sale.
Heather Lithgow’s prize-winning shortbread is on the shelves of Aldi stores across the country, including Berwick.
The 80-year-old, from Cockburnspath, won the cut-price supermarket chain’s competition to find Scotland’s best shortbread recipe, run in partnership with the Scottish Women’s Institute.
As part of her prize, her shortbread was made available as a special buy, priced 99p. She was given £250 worth of Aldi vouchers too.
Heather was also treated to a trip to Browning’s the Bakers in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, to see first hand how her home-made recipe has been turned into a product ready to be enjoyed by Aldi shoppers.
Heather said: “I am absolutely amazed to see how my recipe has been transformed into shortbread ready for Aldi’s shelves.
“Thank you so much to Browning’s for inviting me to see the next stage in the production journey to get my recipe shop-ready. It’s been a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Earlier this year, Heather’s recipe was crowned the best in Scotland after beating 130 other entries.
“I’ve been making this one for about 50 years, but it was nothing special as far as I was concerned, so this came as a bit of a shock.”
Marion MacCormick of Aldi said: “Her traditional buttery recipe really stood out.”
