Berwick Rugby draw opening league game
Barnton RFC 22-22 Berwick RFC
Berwick opened their East League 1 season with a 22-22 away draw against Edinburgh side Barnton on Saturday.
In what was a ding-dong encounter the home side took an early lead, but Berwick stormed back to go in front, only to see indiscipline cost them when a sin-binning enabled the capital side to hit back for a share of the spoils.
In a scrappy start Barton took the lead with an unconverted penalty but Berwick hauled themselves back into contention with Andrew Skeen kicking a penalty.
The visitors then took the lead with two tries, one of which was converted, as they edged 5-15 ahead, but back came Barnton with an unconverted try of their own for 10-15, which was the score at half-time.
Early in the second half Jamie Pick went over for Berwick and Skeen’s conversion made it 10-22, but the home side were determined to make a fight of it and a converted try saw them reduce the deficit to 17-22.
Berwick then had a player sin-binned, and down to 14, they were punished when Barnton scored another unconverted try to level it up at 22-all.
The Blacks were back to a full compliment for the final quarter of an hour, but they could not force a winning score and had to settle for a draw.
