Berwick on verge of title triumph

Berwick Rugby Club are on the verge of being crowned this season’s East District League Division 1 champions.

And the Blacks could land the title this weekend when they travel to Portobello for one of their three remaining fixtures.

The Scremerston side also still have to play against Broughton (home on March 23) and Forrester (away on April 20), but they will hope to have it in the bag long before then.

Berwick are unbeaten in the league so far this season, having won 16 in a row after drawing their opening day fixture, and now they just need three points to be crowned champions.

Team manager Owen Weatherhead said: “Saturday is a big day for the club because the team know they can win the title at Portobello.

“They have done tremendously well so far this season but they will not be taking anything for granted.

“This is the business end of the season. They will go there knowing they have a job to do and I am sure all the players will be focused.

Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed that Berwick 2nds, the Bears, will face Ashington in the final of the County Cup on April 6 - venue to be arranged.
