Berwick MP welcomes court ruling on Article 50
Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan, a staunch 'leave' supporter, has welcomed the Supreme Court ruling which determined that Parliament must approve the triggering of Article 50.
The court, which also ruled that the UK Government does not have to consult the devolved institutions in Stormont, Cardiff and Edinburgh when it triggers Article 50, has determined that the Commons must pass legislation to enact the outcome of June’s referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU.
Speaking after the verdict, Mrs Trevelyan said: “Throughout the referendum campaign, I argued that decisions on UK laws should be taken in the UK Parliament, and that we ought to be beholden only to the determinations of British courts.
“I am delighted the UK Supreme Court has upheld that view, and determined that the UK Parliament, which passed legislation to take us into the EU, must pass legislation to take us out.
“Now the baton is passed to MPs to carry out the will of the British people.
“Whilst I am sure there will be some who will try to thwart the democratic will of the people – such as the SNP and the Liberal Democrats – I have every confidence that the Bill will pass, as the non-binding vote before Christmas did, enabling the Government to proceed with triggering Article 50 by the end of March.”
