Ministry of Design on Bridge Street picked up the hair salon of the year award at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards, held at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow.

Owner Lorna Saygilier said: “It feels absolutely amazing to have beaten salons from Glasgow, Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland and is testimony to the great team I have here.”

The salon was short-listed for the award on the back of positive customer reviews andsocial media comments.

“I got a telephone call out of the blue to say we were regional finalists,” said Lorna. “I have no idea who put us forward for it.

“We were invited to the awards ceremony at the Crown Plaza in Glasgow without any real expectations of winning.

“There were over 600 people there – everyone from barbers, spas, aesthetic clinics, hair salons, beauty salons, nail salons, tanning salons were there – there were 23 categories and the last and most prestigious one, for the overall hair salon of the year, was won by us. It came as a massive shock.”

The Ministry of Design team is made up of hair stylist Lorna, her daughter Eren, who is make-up artist, beautician and assistant manager, hair stylist Anneka Freeburn, junior stylist Hannah Watson and Ashley Miller who joined in June as hair stylist, hair loss specialist and hair extension guru.

Event organisers, posting on Facebook, said: ‘What an amazing evening! We would like to give a huge thank you to all our finalists and winners who came along on Sunday night and made the 6th Scottish #HairandBeautyAwards one to remember!’

They also headed off questions about a salon from the south of the border winning.

‘The salon in question has a Scottish postcode, an owner from Airdrie and more importantly a desire to be part of the Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards. We welcome all salons from Berwick.’
