Gusts of 90mph hit north Northumberland yesterday, causing damage and disruption.

Acting head teacher Steve Wilkes, in a message to parents last night, said: ‘Due to extremely high winds experienced on school site, some of our buildings have experienced damage.

‘Whilst we managed student health and safety by moving students into safer areas, we now need to assess site safety in more detail. This involves specialist assessors as some damage may be structural or require expertise beyond our site management staff.

‘Until this has been completed, I cannot guarantee student safety, and I will not put their safety at risk.
