Beach cleaning volunteers praised
Northumberland County Council will be asked to remove storm debris from beaches in the Berwick area this winter.
Berwick Town Council clerk Gareth Davies told members that volunteers had done a sterling job cleaning local beaches this year but they would need county council help.
“There’s an enormous amount of work that’s been done by volunteers,” he told the local services committee.
“We would expect to need to work with Northumberland County Council when we have a couple of heavy storms.
“Traditionally you’d expect that January to March is the worst time for the kind of flood deposit that brings tractor tyres and dead animals which volunteers won’t be able to tackle.”
The volunteers still plan to carry out regular beach cleans over the winter, although the volume of litter left by the public is much lower.
Meanwhile, Coun Lesley Stephenson said there had been lots of interest in the creation of a wildlife/nature trail.
The project is being led by Berwick U3A but she said lots of other people were interested in helping out.
“If we could get it up and running in the new year, that would be great,” she said.
