Battle of Carhamis commemorated
Hundreds of visitors have helped to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the important, but little known, Battle of Carham.
The Battlefields Trust, in partnership with the Carham 1018 Society, hosted a living history display and battle re-enactment last weekend.
The battle, by the banks of the River Tweed, helped to define the English-Scottish border as we know it today.
Clive Hallam-Baker, who helped to organise it, said: “It was a fabulous weekend.”
The attendance on Saturday had been affected by the England versus Colombia World Cup football but there was a fantastic turnout in glorious weather on Sunday.
“We had visitors from all over the place but the thing that I took away from it was that local people, from both sides of the border, were able to ask what Carham was all about and find out a bit more,” said Mr Hallam-Baker. “People were able to stand and look at the border. It was really quite remarkable.”
The event was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
