Ayton Flower Show cancelled
This year's Ayton Flower Show has been cancelled.
It was to have been held on Saturday, August 25, but the venue, the village primary school, is unavailable and no suitable alternative has been found.
The school is being re-roofed and the job is going to take a few weeks longer to complete than was originally planned.
Bill Stewart, chairman of Ayton Horticultural Society, said: “The committee was only informed by Scottish Borders Council a week ago about this and the whole week has been spent looking at other options, but sadly, in the opinion of the committee, none of these are suitable for various reasons – venue size, insurance issues, public access, etc.
“As far as we are aware, this is the first time there has been no show since the inaugural one in 1881.”
To keep the spirit of the flower show alive, the committee is organising free afternoon tea in Ayton Community Hall on August 25, from 2pm to 4pm. It is hoped that most of those who would have attended the show will attend and share ideas for a better show in 2019.
