The North Road store will be closed from 6pm on Christmas Eve until December 27, and is inviting charities interested in receiving a food donation to get in touch via Christmas@aldi.co.uk before November 18.

The Hawick and Galashiels branches of Aldi are also taking part.

The supermarket estimates that around 20-30 crates of leftover food will be given away be each store.

Last year, Aldi donated 500,000 meals from over 300 participating stores nationwide.

Borders MP John Lamont said: “It’s a scandal that so much food is wasted, particularly at Christmas time, so it’s good to see Aldi running this initiative.

“There are a large number of charities in the Borders who do some excellent work over the festive period and could certainly use this food.

“If this is of interest to any local organisations, I’d urge them to apply to receive this donation.”
