A need for proportion

I write further to Angus Hamilton's letter in which he wrote that I '˜clearly had not taken a direct hit' from the seagulls, (Berwick Advertiser, March 9).

As a Berwick-born resident I have, indeed, taken a ‘direct hit’ on more than one occasion, with one particularly bad episode outside the old Kwik Save site a few years back.

The points I made in relation to the seagull issue at the town council meeting surrounded the difficulty of solving the problem – no other seaside town has managed it – and the need for proportionality.

I also said that it was important to emphasise that Berwick is not full of people going about shooting the seagulls, following the MP’s comments in Parliament that may have given this impression.

I also stated my own personal opinion that dog fouling is a bigger issue.

I suppose we should, at least, all be grateful that dogs cannot fly.
