Northumberland brewery picks up double gold medal at international competition

Kegs are being cracked open in celebration at The Twice Brewed Brew House after one of its most popular beers beat off international competition to pick up a Double Gold award.

The brewery, which shares a site with popular pub The Twice Brewed Inn on one of the most dramatic stretches of Hadrian’s Wall near Bardon Mill, had entered its Juno Pilsner into the European Beer Challenge 2021.

Billed as ‘Europe’s Most Important Beer Competition’, The Twice Brewed’s Juno was one of thousands of beer samples entered into the contest from breweries across 39 countries.

The judges were ‘blown away’ by the taste of the Northumberland-made Bohemian style Pilsner and decided that it was worthy of a Double Gold Medal accolade.

Matthew Brown, head brewer at The Twice Brewed Brew House said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been given this award – our first international prize – and will be hanging it proudly in the Brew House.”

Judged by Europe’s leading beer buyers, winning the top honour will put The Twice Brewed Brew House front and centre for buyers looking to expand their beer and ale offering.

Matthew added: “The European Beer Challenge is one of the industry’s most prestigious events and we feel incredibly honoured to have been given the Double Gold Medal – the competition’s highest prize - for Juno.

“We’re already noticing an increase in enquiries from people requesting samples with a view to getting Twice Brewed beers on their shelves.”

The London County Hall hosted the final tasting, with judges including senior representatives of Bibendum, AleHunters plc, and Claridges Hotel.

Leading sommelier and judge, Alexios Stasinopoulos said: “There was an incredible selection of entrants from all over the globe.”

The Twice Brewed Brew House supplies pubs and retailers all over the North East and beyond with its award-winning range of cask, bottled and canned beers and ales including brews such as Ale Caesar, Sycamore Gap, Steel Rigg and Vindolanda IPA.
