Daughter's desperation after Northumberland care home closure leaves her struggling to find new accommodation for dad

Grovewood House Care Home, a dementia care specialist based at South Charlton, near Alnwick, is expected to close within weeks.
One of the residents faced with moving out is 87-year-old William Macdonald.

Hide Ad“I’m struggling to find a place for him and it’s an extremely anxious time for us,” said his daughter, Julie Nixon, from Hexham.
“He has dementia and has lost his speech so struggles to communicate but he is still aware of what’s going on.
“He’s vulnerable and I’m not sure how he will cope with being moved again. It might have been better off if he had no idea.
“The staff at Grovewood House have become his family,” she added. “They’ve been brilliant. I’m bitterly disappointed that it’s closing.”

Hide Ad“They said they tried to sell the property as a going concern but no-one knew about it,” said Julie.
“I’m now trying to find my father a home nearer to me in Hexham but have only been able to get him on a waiting list for one.”
Eight residents have already moved out of the care home with eight more still to find new accommodation.
The closure will also leave 18 staff out of work.
The home had been expected to close at the end of February but it is now likely to be March.
