Northumberland households asked to 'make some noise for our national heroes'

Alnwick town councillor Linda Wood-Mitchell wants households to show their support for those on the front line in the fight against coronavirus.

She is asking people to ‘make some noise for our national heroes’ at noon every Saturday.

“Let’s make some noise around the country in support of our key workers,” she said.

“Get out your pans and wooden spoons - hoot the car horn, so the workers can hear us and know we support their efforts and to say thank you, you are doing a wonderful job.”

She added: “We may be in this for the long haul so let’s give thanks to our NHS every Saturday – it’s not much to ask.”

Meanwhile, dozens of communities across the UK are planning a coordinated clap for our keys workers including the NHS and carers at 8pm on Thursday, March 26.

The idea has gained momentum on social media in recent days.

‘During these unprecedented times, they need to know that we are grateful,’ says the campaign poster. ‘Please join us for a big applause (from front doors, garden, balcony, windows, living rooms etc) to show all nurses, doctors, GPs and carers our appreciation for their ongoing hard work and fight against this virus.’

Similar events have already been held in countries including Spain, France and the Netherlands.

Italians and Spanish people have also been singing from their balconies and playing musical instruments in order to lift the spirits of not only their families, but their neighbours during the pandemic.
