Fundraising drive to revamp Wooler play park gets £5,000 boost

It is hoped that funds will be swelled by local fundraising and support from the Co-op’s community scheme.

The parish council is hoping to establish a community-led committee to take forward the project.

"Putting our hands in our pocket shows members of the public that we’re right behind it,” said Cllr Mark Mather, parish council chairman.

"We hope that will encourage the community for a big push to fundraise on top of that.

"It’s going to be a huge task to raise £30,000-£50,000, depending on the level of works they suggest.

"The suggestion of works we’ve had so far would place it in the region of £40,000 but the group may decide to go bigger.”

“I think this is a worthwhile community investment. If we show our commitment then I would hope that other funders see that and it might spur people on.”

Cllr Tom Armstrong added: “I think it’s a good idea to set up a group with a good financial start.”

It was hoped the new play park would include all-abilities equipment.

A call has now been made for volunteers to come forward.

Meanwhile, the parish council has agreed to take on an agency agreement for Brysons Park. The decision was reached after the county council agreed to compensate the parish council for £2,270 in costs for play park inspections it had carried out.

"I think that’s a fair outcome and if we can get it signed over to us we know where we stand,” said Cllr Mather.
