Northumberland County Council has allocated £30,000 for the work in its provisional Local Transport Plan (LTP) for 2021/22.

The news was revealed by Cllr Guy Renner-Thompson after members of Bamburgh Parish Council had expressed frustration at the lack of progress on the issue.

He said: “I haven’t had any further update on the plans so we’ll have to wait and see what we get through but we’re moving in the right direction.”

It is understood there will be discussions involving the highways department and Northumberland Coast AONB Partnership before a proposal is brought to the parish council.

Parish councillors felt they should be involved in the discussions at an early stage but Cllr Renner-Thompson explained that officers felt it was better to first find out what is possible.

"I want to get the parish involved as quickly as possible but that will be when there are a few iterations of plans,” he said.

Chairman Barbara Brook responded: “It’s a positive in the budget but one of the frustrations is that silence is golden and we lurch from one month to the next and still there is nothing forthcoming.”

Cllr Andrew Bardgett also voiced criticism of a draft plan seen by councillors.

"We’ve been sent a drawing dated 2019 which shows a gateway feature that you can’t build because it blocks the new footpath,” he explained.

He also complained that disintegrating rumble strips designed to slow traffic down had still not been removed.

"If they’re left long enough they will just disappear by themselves because they are breaking up and there are shards of sharp cobbles on the road by the plantation,” he said.

"They were supposed to be taken out at the end of 2019 and still nothing has happened.”
